Basics: Oven Cooked Bacon

Those of you who know me know that I am a bacon lover.  I like to live by that old saying of “everything is better with bacon”.  Because it is.  Let’s be honest, can you name something that isn’t?!  It’s like deep-frying.  What ISN’T good after it’s been deep-fried?

Anyway, back to the bacon.  I hate cooking bacon in a frying pan.  It’s way too messy.  Splattering grease all over my new cooktop and floor – I don’t think so!  I do use the microwave method a lot, but I hate how it makes my microwave and house smell like bacon for days then afterwards.  So here’s another way to cook bacon that will crisp it up and save your floor from splattering grease.  You can also easily flavor bacon when cooking it this way by drizzling with maple syrup or sprinkling with brown sugar.  Or even black pepper or other spices for a savory approach.  Enjoy!

Oven Cooked Bacon

1 lb your choice of bacon (I prefer a thick-cut variety)

  • Line a baking sheet with foil. This will make cleanup easier later.
  • Arrange bacon slices on the foil and place the baking sheet on the center rack of a cold oven. Close oven door. Turn oven on to 400°F.
  • Bake for 17 to 20 minutes. As soon as the bacon is golden brown, but not too dark, it’s done. The exact time will depend on the thickness of the bacon slices, and also on how quickly your oven reaches the target temperature.
  • Remove the pan from the oven. (*Be careful in this step of any splattering while you remove the pan from the oven.) Transfer the bacon to another sheet pan or large plate lined with paper towels to absorb the fat.
  • Bacon will crisp up a bit as it cools.
